Dog training help?

March 20th, 2009

Hey there, so we are adopting a smaller dog from the humane socitey, his a poodle bichon mix i do believe, he is about 5 months, and has no forman training under him. The adoption ‘package’ that we are doing comes with some ‘puppy classes’ for him, but in the mean time, i’d like to get started on training him, since he is mainly my dog, i have expreinces with dogs, but not with training, any advice? :] I know how to like train them to sit and lie down, and shake and such, i watched videos, but any advice would be great.
I plan on doing like the basics like, sit, stay, come, heel, lie down, that kind of thing before i teach tricks.

Has American culture in terms of dog training changed?

March 20th, 2009

I have been told that pit bulls used to be the family dog. I work with pit bulls at my shelter so I can see how that could be true, however I also know that pit bull problems tend to come from people who buy them and expect them to train themselves, so I was wondering if people used to be more diligent and educated about their dogs than they are now. I know that in decades past there was more emphasis on the family and traditionally mothers would stay home, which would make a difference in at least the dogs wouldn’t be left home alone all the time, but I haven’t seen very many depictions of the stay-at-home mom’s working as dog trainers for breeds with dominance issues. What is the difference between now and then in terms of how pit bulls behave?

My parents are in their 50’s and both grew up with dogs their whole lives, but when we got our first dog they were clueless, and 15 years later still are. They had no idea what to feed, how to train, how often to exercise, nothing. Neither set of my grandparents have dogs anymore so I don’t know how much they know about dogs, but I doubt they were picking up the slack.

And in case anyone didn’t read that thoroughly, I am not saying pit bulls are inherently bad dogs now. I just know they need a certain level of attention and training in order to be happy and well behaved, as any dog does, though perhaps for this breed a bit more since they will happily dominate if allowed. I was just wondering why it was seemingly so much better handled then than it is now.

How do you stop a dog from crying when crate training it?

March 18th, 2009

Rottweiler, 10 weeks, been crate training for 3 weeks, always cries/ whines/ barks when placed in cage as if being punished. Tried shorter amounts of time, remaining in the area while she is in it, feeding her in/ out of the crate, but she still cries. She also chews her urine training pad into a million peices overnight!!! The only time she is hyper or misbehaves is in the crate.

Dog Training Advice Needed?

March 17th, 2009

A friend on mine lives in a very horrible area, extremely ghetto.
He has two dogs he wants to train to protect him. He’s been keeping the dogs with him 24/7 and they are only 13 weeks old.
He doesn’t like anyone touching them or giving them treats because he doesn’t want them to like other people. He loves them but is there another route to training them to be guard/protection dogs? I can tell he hates keeping them cooped up everyday in either his bedroom ( he is 17 ) or in the yard for bathroom breaks.

Have you used Bark Busters dog training (the franchise, not a dog collar)?

March 14th, 2009

They send trainers to you. It is $595 for 2-10 sessions, depending on what you need.
They guarantee it for life.
They come to your home. Is it best to have a trainer come to your home to help you with your situation, rather than just take your dog to classes?
Is trying to be the alpha dog the solution to many problems?
Please let me know your own personal situation and experience.
Thanks.

Dog Training for a new solo owner?

March 14th, 2009

My family has given me a few books for dog training. One is Dog training for dummies and the other is Caesars’ Way by Caesar Milan. I want to try training my german shepherd/lab mix by myself but worried it might be too late….she’s 1 1/2 yrs old and I got her a few months ago. I really just want her to be able to go to places with me like a friends house and not worry that she is going to bite people….as you can tell this recently happened but pretty sure it was just that she was scared and had never been to my friends house before.
