Suggestions on training a dog not to sleep on bed?

February 27th, 2009 | by admin |

We have a 10 year old beagle that we adotped 2 months ago. Since we brought him home we made the mistake of letting him sleep in our bed with us at night. Now were are getting ready to move into a new home and would like to train him to sleep elsewhere, possibly still in our room, without having to crate him at night. One important aspect of this is that he is very set in his ways and really doesn’t like being moved when he is where he wants to be. If you try to move him, he reacts accordingly. How can we go about this training? Should we begin before moving or use the new home to assit in the training?

Pain compliance-kick him off the bed(just kidding). Close the door to your room, it will eventually get the hint.

I would try to retrain him before the move so he doesn’t have so much to adjust to at once. Put a bed or blanket next to your bed and giving him treats when he lays on it. Do this before you go to bed just be in the room reading etc. If he gets on the bed by himself tell him No and take him of and put him on his bed and say Stay - Your bed if he stays at all treat him. You must remove him at once everytime he gets on the bed. No attention or talking or petting on your bed lots of praise, petting treats when on his bed. If he can’t get on the bed without help - ignore his pleading and treat every time he is quiet and a lot of praise if he lays down quietly anywhere appropiate.
